Secondary school places

You must apply for a secondary school place for your child to start year 7 at secondary school. You will need to do this when your child is in Year 6 at primary school.

If your child is already at secondary school and you want to move them to a different school you must apply for an in year admission.

What to do

  • Choose a school

It's important to find out more about schools you're interested in before you apply. You can apply for up to 4 schools.

If you are thinking about applying for a grammar school, your child can only be offered a place if they have been assessed as suitable. Assessment takes place via the Kent Test or in some cases by a test held by the school. It is now too late to apply for the Kent Test for children starting secondary school in 2015. If you missed the deadline and want to apply for grammar school please call 03000 41 21 21 or email kent.admissions@kent.gov.uk. The admissions team will be unavailable on the 18 and 19 December 2014 owing to an office move.

  • Apply

The national closing date for children starting secondary school in September 2015 was 31 October 2014. However, we accepted applications until 5 November 2014 to allow parents extra time to consider options following the Kent Test results.

If you missed the closing date for applications you can submit a late application by post using the Secondary Common Application Form (SCAF) (PDF, 581.3 KB). If you apply late you may not receive your offer until 22 April 2015.

Return your form to: Admissions, Room 2.24, Sessions House, County Hall, Maidstone. ME14 1XQ.

You can apply for up to 4 schools, putting them in order of preference. It's in your best interests to list 4 schools. Naming only one school does not guarantee your child a place at that school or give your child priority for a place over another child, neither does naming a school more than once.

Download the full admissions guide (PDF, 5.1 MB), which includes details of school open days and evenings.

    Additional information

Some schools may need you to complete an additional form called a Supplementary Information Form (SIF). You can obtain the form from the school.
