Secondary schools

The main types of secondary school in Kent are:

Grammar schools

Grammar schools take children from the age of 11 (Year 7) and admit pupils on the basis of their ability. To go to a Kent grammar school, your child would have to take and pass the Kent Test (also known as the eleven-plus) in their last year at primary school. Some Kent grammar schools also have their own entry test.

Grammar schools offer a sixth form, or Years 12 and 13,  where children can study after the age of 16.

Academies

Academies take children from the age of 11 (Year 7).  Some academies admit children of all abilities, and some (which were formerly grammar schools) are selective and admit pupils on the basis of ability. If the academy is selective your child would have to take and pass the Kent Test.   Some academies offer a sixth form, or Years 12 and 13,  where children can study after the age of 16.

Comprehensive, wide ability and high schools

These schools take children of all abilities from the age of 11. Some of these schools offer a sixth form, or Years 12 and 13,  where children can study after the age of 16. The three Free Schools proposing to open for September 2013 will also take children of all abilities.
