Secondary schools

There are three main types of secondary school in Kent. You will probably find at least one of these types of school in a town near you.

Grammar schools

Grammar schools take children from the age of 11 (Year 7) and admit pupils on the basis of their ability. To go to a Kent grammar school, your child would have to take and pass the Kent Test (also known as the eleven-plus) in their last year at primary school. Some Kent grammar schools have their own tests for your child to take.

Some grammar schools offer a 'sixth form' or Years 11 and 12 where children can study after the age of 16.

Comprehensive (wide ability) schools

Comprehensive schools take children of all abilities from the age of 11. Some comprehensive schools offer a 'sixth form' or Years 11 and 12 where children can study after the age of 16.

Academies

Academies take children of all abilities from the age of 11. Some comprehensive schools offer a 'sixth form' or Years 11 and 12 where children can study after the age of 16.
