Treatment for sexually transmitted infections (STIs)

The results bureau will advise you on where you can access treatment. Treatment is usually in the form of antibiotic tablets. If you need to attend a clinic, you will be helped to find a local service near you.

If you are informed that you have an infection you will usually be advised to abstain from sexual intercourse until you have attended for treatment, for 7 days after treatment or until treatment has been completed to avoid re-infection. It is also important not to have sex with anyone you think may have given you the infection, or who you think you may have passed the infection onto until they have been tested and treated as well.

Many sexually transmitted infections like chlamydia are easily treatable. Some infections such as the HIV virus will be managed long term as they cannot be cured, but treatment can be very effective in controlling it.
