Volunteer as an education appeal panel member

We are seeking to appoint volunteers for our education appeals panels who deal with school admissions. Volunteers must be able to work on our appeals panels between the hours of 9am - 5pm for up to 7-10 days, and to be available throughout the whole of Kent.

Overview of the role

Our panel members fall into two categories:

  • Lay member - people without personal experience in the management or provision of education in any school (disregarding experience as a school governor or in another voluntary capacity)
  • Advisory members - people who have special knowledge and/or experience of the provision of education

As an appeal panel volunteer, you are eligible for travel and subsistence expenses and where applicable, a financial loss allowance will be paid.

Requirements of the role

A two day training programme is arranged for March, and will take place at Sessions House, County Hall Maidstone.

You cannot apply to be a panel member if you are:

  • An elected member of the local education authority
  • Employed by the LEA (other than as a teacher)

Restrictions on appointment may also arise from other connections with the LEA or governing body and will be considered on an individual basis.
