We Are Beams

We are Beams is a charity which supports disabled children and young people and their families in Dartford, Gravesham and Sevenoaks. The charity provides a range of support to families, who are often coping with very complex health needs and disabilities.

Among the services We are Beams provides are trips and short breaks, helping children and young people to have fun and develop independence, personal and social skills while also providing respite for parents and carers.

The charity used funding from our Community Transport Grant towards 2 new fully accessible vehicles, which have made it possible for many more families to enjoy much needed trips and respite care. Trips have included visits to the seaside, a trip to the zoo and a much-loved outing to Wingham Wildlife Park.

Older children have also been able to go bowling, to the cinema and out for lunch with friends and other families more regularly.

The cars are regularly used to drive guests to the charity’s ‘Dragon’s Retreat’, an overnight short break centre in Hextable, specially created for disabled children with severe and complex needs, where one-to-one care is given.

When not ferrying children, young people and families to exciting adventures, they are kept in constant use throughout the week for school runs and for emergency care to help support families caring for some of Kent’s most vulnerable children.
