M20 Junction 4 Eastern Overbridge

This scheme saw the eastern bridge over the M20 Junction 4 (West Malling) widened to provide an extra traffic lane, increasing the road from 2 lanes to 3 lanes. The new widened bridge opened on 5 February 2017.

The scheme included:

  • widening of the eastern bridge over the M20 to provide an extra traffic lane (from 2 lanes to 3 lanes)
  • minor changes to the top of the east facing slip roads to accommodate the widened bridge

The western overbridge was resurfaced and junction improvement works were carried out in autumn 2017.

The temporary restriction on turning right out of Castle Way has now been made permanent. Further works will take place to improve access on the Park Road roundabout in autumn 2017.

The principal contractor was John Sisk and Son.

M20 Junction 4 is a key connection of the A228 with the motorway network.

The A228 runs from the Isle of Grain to the A21 at Tunbridge Wells. Part of this route runs along the Medway Valley, which has many homes under construction or planned, such as at Holborough and Peter's Village, Wouldham.

The scheme provides extra space on the junction to help reduce congestion, improve the operation of the junction and improve safety.

The £5.69 million project has been secured by Kent County Council, with £2.2 million from the Local Growth Fund obtained from the South East Local Enterprise Partnership, and the £3.69 million match funding.

Formal decisions

The approval to progress the M20 Junction 4 Eastern Overbridge was taken by Kent County Council on 17 September 2014.

The decision by the SELEP Accountability Board to grant Local Growth Funding for the M20 Junction 4 Eastern Overbridge was made on the 20 March 2015.
