Non-conformist churches

We can help you register a non-conformist building for worship or for holding a wedding ceremony.

According to the Places of Worship Registration Act (1855), you can apply to have your building licensed for worship.

This doesn't include churches or chapels of the Church of England, unless the congregation share their building with another non-conformist religious group.

If you want the building of worship to become a place where marriages can take place, you need to apply for the building to be registered for the solemnisation of marriages under section 41 of the Marriage Act 1949.

How to apply

You will need to apply to the general register office to register a non-conformist church for worship or marriage. In the first instance, you should contact us and we can advise you on the application process.
