Highway maintenance

Maintenance is essential to keep road users safe. Knowing what we look after and how much we can spend enables decisions to be made on how we maintain them so they last as long as possible. We try to get the balance right - between minimal disruption and regularly maintaining roads.

Potholes

Any potholes you find can be repaired if reported using our online fault reporting form.

Trees, hedges and verges

Grass verges, trees, shrubs and hedges around the roadside can be part of the natural surroundings or planted to help reduce noise and make built up areas look more attractive.

We maintain the vegetation on the land that we are responsible for. A large amount of vegetation is on land we don't own. If vegetation from private land is causing a problem on a highway, we can ask the owner to cut, trim or remove the obstruction.

Applications and licences

To carry out work or place anything on the public highway, that will cause an obstruction, hazard or danger and to ensure the highway is safe for all users, you will almost certainly require permission from us.

Traffic regulation orders

Traffic regulation orders are made to control the flow of traffic and make sure that people park safely and conveniently. They can only be introduced following the appropriate legal process.

Anyone can object to, or support, any of the proposed traffic orders. Your comments must be submitted before the end of the consultation period, which is clearly stated in each order.
