"After being scammed on the phone for over £2,000, I realised I needed to be more careful in other areas too—especially online. I used to avoid the internet because I didn’t feel confident. But now, I’ve found some simple ways to stay safe. The internet can be really useful.

You can read the news, watch your favourite programmes, or look up things you’re curious about. It helps you feel connected to the world—even if you live alone. And if you do have family or friends, it’s a great way to keep in touch. I’ve started using stronger passwords—ones that aren’t easy to guess.

And I never use the same password for everything. I also turn on something called ‘two-factor authentication’—it’s just an extra step to keep your accounts safe.

If I get an email or text that looks odd, I don’t click on anything. I look for spelling mistakes or messages that try to rush me—like ‘act now!’ If I’m not sure, I ask someone I trust before doing anything. Ask someone if you’re unsure.

I only shop on websites I know and trust. I check that the web address starts with ‘https’—that little ‘s’ [https:/www.kent.gov.uk] means it’s secure.

And I never click on adverts that pop up on social media or unfamiliar sites. If you’ve been scammed, please don’t feel ashamed. These people are clever, and they catch you off guard. But you’re not alone."
