Home Library Service video transcript
This transcript is for video on the Home Library Service page.
The video opens on an elderly lady in her 90s sitting at her dining room table at home, surrounded by mementos, collectables and photographs of family in the background. She has pure white hair in an elegant updo, and a kind face that you can tell has spent a lot of time smiling and chatting. She is a Kent Libraries Home Library Service user.
Home Library Service user: For me, it’s a life saver I’ve got to be honest. Oh blimey, yeah!”
She holds up one of the books from her latest deliveries to show other in the room off camera, with a great big smile.
Home Library Service user: “[Laughs] And um, I just love reading!”
The video cuts to a silent shot of a Home Library Service volunteer. She is of retirement age, dressed in a big red winter coat and woolly hat. She’s outside in a residential street, carrying two jute bags full of books ready to deliver. A front door opens, and our Home Library Service user greets the volunteer with a smile.
Home Library Service user: “I’ve learned lots of different authors. I’ve got all my [books set in the] 1940s, you know, I love them.”
We’re now inside again, and the customer is standing at the table, digging through the bags of books excitedly to see what has been chosen for her by our volunteer and library staff.
Home Library Service user: “I’ve learned so much about different parts of the country. It has been known for me to take one of these books to bed, and then I suddenly look at the clock saying half past three! [Laughs]”
Volunteer: “Oh, I’ve got one you’re really going to like. Look!”
The Home Library Service user and volunteer sit at the table together, and the volunteer hands over a hardback book.
Home Library Service user: “Oh yeah? Oh, I’m going to read that! Excuse me! No I won’t open it…”
She looks up at the camera with a big grin.
Volunteer: “She’ll stop talking.”
They both laugh, as does everyone else off camera.
Home Library Service user: “[Laughs] You won’t hear another word out of me!”
Volunteer: “I know you’re one of the longest ones that I’ve been visiting.”
The two ladies continue to talk, as the video shows our volunteer carrying bags of books, and approaching a doorway from the street. She then knocks on a front door.
Home Library Service user: “Oh yeah, I know.”
Volunteer: “On the way out of the library, I saw the sign, which I notice is up again at the moment, saying, ‘do you have time, could you become a Home Library Service volunteer? And I though actually yes, I could, because I’ve only just moved here, I don’t know an awful lot of people. It would be a good way of getting to know people.”
The two ladies sit at the table and laugh. The volunteer pats our Home Library Service user’s hand as she laughs.
Volunteer: “It doesn’t take long to get to know this lady! As you can well imagine!”
The customer has two books in her hands and another three on the table as she looks through the large selection of thriller paperbacks.
Home Library Service user: “Sometimes I forget I’m a bit of a Londoner still! [Laughs]”
The video has a closing shot of our customer looking very happy and laughing with the people off camera, still chatting away.
The volunteering ‘Time to Give’ logo, and the Kent Libraries logo appear on screen, overlayed on a shot of our customer’s hand holding tightly to a pile of paperbacks on her dining room table.
