A break from caring

Being a carer can be physically and emotionally challenging, and it's important you have the opportunity to take a break from your caring role.

There are lots of ways you can take what we call a 'short break' from caring. This could be for a few hours, overnight, a weekend or longer. The person you care for will be looked after in a supportive, safe environment and perhaps enjoy new activities while you take some time for yourself.

There are different kinds of short breaks available, depending on the sort of needs the person you're caring for has.

As a carer, you may be looking for financial support to look after your child or young person. Learn which benefits and discounts you may be entitled to.

Caring for children and young people (0 to 18)

Short breaks provide fun and positive activities for disabled children and young people (0 to 18) to take part in. They help to develop independence, their physical and emotional health, increase their readiness in becoming an adult and reduce loneliness.

Whilst short breaks help parents and carers to take a break from their caring responsibilities, and spend time with other family members.
