Support to reduce your energy bills

Financial advice and support may be available from the government, your local authority, your energy supplier, or local charities.

Charities such as Green Doctors South and National Energy Foundation offer support with accessing the Priority Services Register and water or energy debt relief. Visit their websites to find out more. You can also visit the Citizens Advice website to see how they can help you better understand, reduce, or manage your energy bills.

Visit our cost of living support and Household Support Fund pages to find out what other help is available for eligible households.

The Pensioner Just Missing Out scheme is for pension-aged residents on lower incomes who are not eligible for Pension Credit or the government’s Winter Fuel Payment. The scheme enables you to apply for support with food, energy or both.

Automatic discounts

If you are eligible, discounts should be applied to your bills according to the government schemes below.

Warm Home Discount: This will reopen in October 2024. If you are eligible, a one-off £150 discount will be applied to your electricity bill.

Winter Fuel Payment: You could get £200-£300 to help you pay your heating bills if you were born before 23 September 1958.

Cold Weather Payment: If you are eligible, you can receive payment if the average temperature in your area is recorded as, or forecast to be, 0°C or below across 7 consecutive days.

Ask your supplier for help

You can find your energy supplier contact details on your most recent bill, or on their website.

Ofgem recommends contacting your energy supplier as soon as possible if you are worried about paying your energy bills or are in debt to your supplier.

For example, you could have your energy bill paid directly out of any benefits you may claim, which could help you repay any debt to the provider. Learn more at Fuel Direct at GOV.UK.

Priority Services Register

The Priority Services Register gives you advance notice of planned power cuts, priority support in an emergency, accessible information, and more.

If eligible, you can request to be added to the register by asking your supplier. Find more information on the Ofgem website.
