[Narrator] Hello everyone. Today, let's delve into a topic close to our comfort: staying warm safely. It's about those cosy companions we rely on especially during chilly nights.

Let's start with electric blankets. Now electric blankets can be snuggly, but safety is key. Check if yours can stay on overnight. If not, switch it off and unplug it when you tuck in for the night. Keep an eye out for warning signs like fraying fabric or scorch marks. Never turn it on if it's wet or could get wet and remember no pairing with a hot water bottle. And here's a tip, have an expert test your electric blanket at least every three years and consider replacing it every 10 years.

Moving on to portable heaters, they can be handy but caution is crucial. Never leave them unattended and it's no no while you're sleeping. Keep them away from from anything flammable; paper, furniture, clothing and curtains. Let's talk danger signs. Regularly inspect your electrical items. Look for frayed or exposed wires, strange smells, buzzing or crackling sounds. Watch out the sparks or smoke from plugs or appliances, black marks or scorching, damaged leads, colored wire showing or melted plastic. And keep an eye on fuses. If they blow or circuit breakers operate for no apparent reason it's time to act.

Now in case of a fire, if safe turn off the electrics and leave the room. Close that door, containment is key. But here's the golden rule: never try to tackle the fire alone. Call the fire service and get to safety. Adding an extra layer of safety; consider a home fire safety visit.

Free for those aged 70 or over, living with dementia, having a long-term health condition with young children or pregnant or if you're a smoker. Contact our home fire safety advisors at 0800 923 7000 or visit the website https://www.kent.fire-uk.org/.

So stay warm, stay safe. Your comfort and safety are our priorities. Until next time, take care.
