[Narrator] Hello there.

Today let's talk about something crucial, the safety of products we use every day.

The Office for Product Safety and Standards recently reviewed popular products in the UK and the findings are quite eye-opening. They discovered that some products being sold online and in shops don't meet safety standards. Surprisingly over 10% of these goods could potentially cause harm. For instance, they found issues with kettles leaking water leading to burns and even slip hazards.

Now here's something important. UK laws don't require online marketplaces to check the safety of products like traditional retailers. This lack of regulation can put consumers at risk. Electrical Safety First warns us about the dangers of buying from online marketplaces. Did you know that 73% of UK consumers are unaware of the risks of fire and shock from electricals bought online? Shocking right. One in 10 Brits has experienced an electrical fire or shock from online purchases.

So let's talk about the most reported faulty or dangerous electrical goods. Chargers, extension leads, kitchen appliances, adapters, hair dryers, you name it. While we're all looking for a good deal, especially in times like this cost-of-living crisis, you've got to be cautious, especially when it comes to electrical goods. Try to stick with well-known store names whether you're shopping on the High Street or online.

Now let's look at buying second-hand goods. Trading Standards experts advise against buying items like electric fires, electric blankets and irons at boot sales or somewhere like a social media Marketplace unless the item has a reputable recent source and is complete with original instructions.

And for those of you who love browsing in charity shops, sellers of second-hand electrical goods are responsible for ensuring their products meet legal safety requirements. Ask the sales assistant and look for things like a Portable Appliance Test sticker on an item as it's an indication it has had some checks.

Your safety is important and being informed is the first step. Don't compromise on safety for a bargain. Take care, be cautious and let's keep our homes safe. Until next time, stay safe.
