Fall prevention courses
Falls are a major health issue, particularly among adults aged 65 or older, or anyone with an impairment which affects balance and stability.
One of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of falling is by improving your postural stability. This is your ability to control and maintain balance whilst moving.
Staying active is key to increasing your postural stability and supports your independence and confidence in your daily life. Regular movement helps maintain your:
- strength
- flexibility
- coordination.
Which are all essential for keeping your balance. There are so many ways to keep active, whether it’s walking, group exercise, or strength and balance classes. It all can make a significant difference.
Explore ways to stay active and keep connected in your area.
If you need urgent help, or know of someone who has had a fall and needs rehabilitation support, contact the NHS Falls Prevention Service.

Proposed changes to the postural stability service
Our Public Health Team recently held a public consultation on proposed updates to the postural stability service. These changes are based on feedback from service users and population trends in Kent.
The key proposals are to:
- reduce the course length from 36 weeks to 12 weeks
- extend eligibility to adults aged 50 and over
- offer more classes in more locations, especially in high-need communities
- allow more organisations to apply for grants of up to £3,000 per year.
These changes aim to make the service more accessible, local, and available earlier in life. It will also help people stay fit, mobile, and independent for longer.
The consultation is now closed. The findings are being considered but more information will be posted here soon. In the meantime, you can still access support outlined above.
