Ramsgate Road footpath improvements

We're improving sections of footpath along Ramsgate Road, Margate, between St Peter's Road and Perkins Avenue.

Parts of the existing footpath have become worn and uneven over time. These improvements will create a smoother and safer route for the many people who use the area every day, including:

• residents
• school pupils and families
• hospital staff and visitors
• people travelling to local businesses.

The works will help make it easier and safer for people to walk along this busy route.

What will change

The scheme involves rebuilding sections of footpath along Ramsgate Road.

The work includes:

• removing existing footpath surfaces
• rebuilding the footpath foundation where needed
• laying new asphalt surfaces
• replacing vehicle crossing points
• resetting sections of granite kerbing.

Once complete, the footpaths will provide a more even and durable surface for pedestrians.

Walking routes during the works

We know Ramsgate Road is an important walking route for people travelling to nearby schools, the hospital, local businesses and bus stops. Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the works.

We will always provide temporary footways or crossings points to other footways whilst the works are taking place. These routes will be clearly signed and protected with barriers to help people move around the work area safely.

The temporary routes will be designed to accommodate wheelchair users, mobility scooter users and people with pushchairs, with ramps and suitable walkway widths provided where needed.

To make sure pedestrian routes remain safe and accessible, all temporary signs, barriers and ramps will be inspected twice daily by the contractor.

A dedicated traffic management operative will also be on site Monday to Saturday, between 7am and 7pm, to monitor the traffic management arrangements and ensure pedestrian walkways remain in a safe condition.

Access to homes and businesses

We will do our best to maintain vehicle access to properties wherever possible. There may be short periods when work is taking place directly outside a property and vehicle access is temporarily restricted.

If you have specific access requirements, such as care visits, deliveries or mobility needs, please contact us before the works reach your area.

Local businesses will remain open during construction and we encourage people to continue supporting them throughout the works.

Parking and traffic management

To carry out the work safely, parking restrictions and lane closures will be needed in some areas while works are taking place.

The scheme will be completed in short sections, usually around 70 to 100 metres at a time. Only one section will be worked on at any one time before moving to the next area.

Traffic management operatives will be on site during phases 1 to 4 to help manage traffic and assist emergency services if required.

Signed diversion routes will be in place where necessary.

Timescales

The programme is currently planned as follows. All dates are subject to change.

Reducing disruption

We understand these works will cause some disruption for residents, businesses and people travelling through the area.

To reduce this as much as possible, we will:

• work on short sections at a time
• maintain pedestrian access throughout the scheme
• provide advance notice of upcoming works
• keep access available for emergency services
• use signed diversion routes where required.

Some noise, dust and disruption are unavoidable while the old footway is removed and rebuilt. We apologise for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience while these improvements are carried out.
