The scheme formed part of the Keep Maidstone Moving programme, with proposed improvements at the Sutton Road Willington Street junction aimed at reducing congestion, travel times and pollution in Maidstone.

The project was approved by The South East Local Enterprise Partnership (SELEP) at the February 2016 Accountability Board. However, it did not receive support from the local community, Maidstone Borough Council (MBC), or Kent County Council (KCC) councillors during the 2017 consultation. Subsequent designs were put forward to retain more green space, but these revisions did not achieve sufficient benefits.

As a result, the scheme was formally withdrawn from the Maidstone Integrated Transport Programme (MITP) programme in 2024/2025, with the funding transferred to back to our main revenue stream.
