Our bid submissions

We submitted 2 funding bids to improve important routes in the county. They are for the:

  • A226 Galley Hill Road (primary bid)
  • A299 Thanet Way (Exceptional Case bid).

A226

The A226 between Dartford and Gravesend is an important route for residents, businesses and lorries travelling across north Kent.

In April 2023, part of the hillside supporting the road collapsed. This caused a landslip which damaged the road and pavement. For safety reasons, we have closed the road since then. While we work on a long-term solution, traffic is being diverted on to alternative routes. This helps keep people moving across this area of Kent.

Funding information

  • Total scheme cost: £45.3 million
  • Funding bid: £40.8 million
  • Match funding: £4.5 million (£1.5 million Ebbsfleet Development Corporation and £3 million KCC funding).

A299 Thanet Way

The A299 Thanet Way is a key route connecting Thanet with the rest of Kent. It provides access to:

  • local communities
  • businesses
  • the Port of Ramsgate
  • Manston Airport.

The proposed project includes:

  • upgrading safety equipment to modern standards in the Chestfield and Ramsgate tunnels
  • rebuilding sections of road affected by ground movement
  • stabilising 4 road bridges.

These upgrades will make the route safer and more reliable. They will also support future growth and transport links in east Kent.

Funding information

  • Total scheme cost: £75 million
  • Funding bid: £63 million
  • Match funding: £12 million KCC funding.
