Pencester Road
The Pencester Bus priority scheme was part of Kent's Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP). Funded by the government, it was chosen for its ability to improve:
- the Dover Fastrack bus service
- the link to existing bus services in Pencester Road
- current bus services in Dover while establishing a new link to the Port of Dover.
The aim was to improve the bus network and encourage more people to use buses, helping to make services more sustainable in the future.
Why we're making changes
The changes:
- supported Dover District Council’s Local Plan and housing developments such as Whitfield Urban Expansion and Connaught Barracks.
- improve dthe journey time and reliability of Dover Fastrack and bus services in Dover
- promoted economic growth
- maintained a reliable Dover Fastrack network
- increased passenger numbers.
What will change
The scheme included the following changes:
- Realigned kerbs and pavements at the Worthington Street and Biggin Street junction. This allows buses to cross into Pencester Road.
- Installation of traffic lights at the Worthington Street, Biggin Street and Pencester Road junction. The existing controlled crossing on Pencester Road remains.
- Realigned kerbs and pavements at the southern end of Pencester Road. The existing pavement was reduced to install a central island to separate the lanes.
- Installed a contraflow bus and cycle lane along the western side of Pencester Road, between Biggin Street and Maison Dieu Road. All existing parking has been removed from this side of the road.
- Reduced the existing pavement width. This allows for an uninterrupted bus lane between the parking area entrance behind the shops and the front of Dover Technical College.
- Installed traffic lights at the Pencester Road and Maison Dieu junction. We also realigned the kerbs and footpaths on both sides of Pencester Road to allow buses to pass through. The existing controlled pedestrian crossing on A256 Maison Dieu Road remains.
- Installed a pedestrian crossing on Pencester Road.
- The existing southbound bus stops and bus stands remain with the addition of two bus stops on the western side of Pencester Road.
