Cinque Ports Phase 5 Shared Use Foot and Cycleway
About the project
We created a safer and direct route for cycling and walking between Nickolls Road and Dymchurch Redoubt.
The scheme runs along the A259, providing a shared use foot and cycleway between Palmarsh and the sea wall south of the Dymchurch Redoubt.
This project started in November 2021 and was completed in February 2023.
This scheme continues the work of previous phases to install a virtually all off-road cycle route from Folkestone to Littlestone-on-Sea.
The scheme was funded from the £6.1m Active Travel Fund (Tranche2) provided by Active Travel England.
This project underwent a full consultation process before construction started. Find out more about the consultation.

What we improved
We have:
- converted 1.5km of verge to a hard paved shared use foot and cycleway on the coast side of the A259
- provided street lighting
- installed new signage throughout the route
- relocated existing signposts and street furniture to avoid obstruction to pedestrians and cyclists
- improved crossing facilities at junctions for pedestrians and cyclists.
