Roadworks are the most common reason for closing a road for a set amount of time. Other reasons include street parties, events, building demolition and the use of heavy plant machinery.
Types of road closures
Anyone can request a road to be closed temporarily. The cost and minimum notice period depends on the type of road closure.
Planned work - for up to 18 months
Cost: £910 legal administration fee including advertising costs
Notice period: 12 weeks (minimum)
Governed by: Section 14 (1) Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984

Events or entertainment - for up to 3 days
Cost: £910 legal administration fee including advertising costs
Notice period: 12 weeks (minimum)
Governed by: Section 16 (a) Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984
