Tony's Connect to Work story
Tony heard about Connect to Work through his local Jobcentre.
He had worked in construction before, but had been out of work for 3 years after being diagnosed with COPD. Tony wanted to find a new direction but needed support to take the next step.
How we helped
Tony worked with his employment specialist, Vicky, to explore different opportunities. Because of his health and age, he wanted a gradual return to work.
Vicky suggested volunteering as a way to try something new in a supportive environment. She helped Tony see that he already had many useful skills from his previous jobs.
Together, they worked on building his confidence. Vicky helped him prepare for interviews and practise talking to employers. She also looked for opportunities that matched Tony's needs and interests.
Vicky arranged for Tony to visit Working Wisdom Hospice Charity Shop in Rochester and try a shift there. She attended with him to provide support.
As Tony became more confident, he needed less hands-on help and began using his skills independently.
Tony was open about his health needs and the time he had spent out of work. The charity shop welcomed him and made sure he had the support he needed to work safely.
Tony settled into the role and now volunteers every week as a valued member of the team.
Tony's success
Volunteering has given Tony a new sense of purpose. He enjoys learning new skills and helping his local community. He has even learned how to use the till and create window displays, which are things he never expected to do.
Today, Tony continues to grow in confidence and experience. With support from Connect to Work, he is now starting to explore paid opportunities in the retail sector.
Tony said:
"There's no stress at the shop, and everyone is very friendly. Learning how to use the till is something I never thought I would do. It's very different from the work I used to do, but I really enjoy it."
What Vicky saw:
Tony has become a reliable and valued member of the team. Through steady support and encouragement, he has built new skills, gained confidence and moved closer to returning to paid employment.
