Claire's Connect to Work story

Claire was referred to the Connect to Work programme by her local Jobcentre.

She had not worked for more than 20 years. This was because of difficult life experiences, including domestic abuse, mental health challenges and caring for others.

Claire wanted to find a job but needed help. She was not confident using technology to look for work online. She also needed support to create a CV, write cover letters and complete job applications.

How we helped

Her employment specialist, Kevin, worked with her to update her CV and show the skills she had gained from previous customer service and cleaning jobs. Together, they wrote cover letters and completed online applications.

Because Claire had caring responsibilities, Kevin offered appointments that worked around her schedule. They met in person and spoke on the phone. Kevin was also available between appointments to discuss new job opportunities.

Claire was keen to get back into work. Through Connect to Work's network of trusted employers, Kevin helped her find jobs that matched her skills and experience.

Soon after, Claire got a part-time job as a cleaner. She could then add this experience to her CV. Not long afterwards, she was offered a second job as a carer.

Connect to Work also helped remove some of the barriers that could have stopped Claire from starting work. The programme helped her get her DBS check and Right to Work documents. It also helped pay for her work uniform and travel during her first week.

Claire's success

Today, Claire is doing well in her 2 jobs. She works as a carer for Bluebird Care and a cleaner for Maid2Clean.

Claire said:

"I'm 54 and had been out of work for a long time because of things that happened in my life, including an abusive relationship. Kevin helped me every step of the way. He helped me get important documents, improve my CV, build my confidence and find work.

For years, I never thought I would be working again. I'm very grateful for all the support Kevin gave me. I wanted to attend today, but I couldn't because I was at work. That's something I'm very proud to say.
