Land use
Kent has a land area of 1,368 square miles and approximately 350 miles of coastline.
It is known as 'the garden of England' as a minimum of 72.7% of the land in each of the 12 districts is undeveloped.

Households
According to the 2021 Census, Kent has 648,393 households. The majority (65.4%) of these are one family households. The average household size in Kent is 2.39 people which is comparable to that of the South East (2.39 people) and the national figure of 2.37 people.

House prices
Data from the Land Registry states that the average house price in Kent during 2024 was £400,679. This is higher than the national average of £365,107 but lower than the average for the South East which is £450,697.

Council Tax
Band D Council Tax is the standard measure of council tax (all other bands are set as a proportion of the Band D). 20.3% of dwellings in Kent fall into this band. Council Tax for a Band D property in Kent varies from £2,281 per month in Dartford up to £2,437 per month in Folkestone and Hythe. The England average is £2,280. The largest number and proportion of Kent dwellings fall into band C (194,490 dwellings, 27.2%).

Deprivation
In 2025, Kent has no local authority within the 10% least deprived in the country, however Sevenoaks, Tonbridge and Malling, and Tunbridge Wells are within the 30% least deprived.
Thanet is the only Kent local authority within the top 10% most deprived local authorities in England, ranking 26th out of 296 local authorities.
The four coastal authorities of Dover, Folkestone and Hythe, Swale, and Thanet, plus Medway are all within the 30% most deprived local authorities in England (decile 1 to 3).
