Library fines

If you return your library item after its due back date you will need to pay a fine. You can check when your library items are due back by logging in to your library account.

If you are late returning an item, the following charges apply:

Books

  • 15p per item per day (up to a maximum of £6 per item)
  • If you are under 18, over 60 or borrowing children’s books, the charge is 2p per day up to a maximum of £1.
  • You won't be fined for late children's items if borrowed with a child under 5's library card.

Films and TV

  • 50p per day per item

Email reminders

If we send you a letter to remind you about unreturned items we will ask you to pay for the postage. We can now remind you for free by email 3 days before your items are due to be back to stop you from being fined. To sign up to this service, log into your library account and make sure ‘receive library notices by email’ is ticked on the personal details tab. You can also speak to a member of staff in any of our libraries.

Reserve a book

If your local library doesn't have the book (or item) you want to borrow, you can reserve it for a small charge.

You can reserve items:

We will send you an email when your item is ready for collection and will give you 7 days to collect it. If the item is not collected within 7 days it will be returned to the shelves for other people to borrow.

Charges

  • 35p per item when they are held in any other Kent library (free to under-18s in full-time education)
  • £3 if provided by one of our SELMS partner libraries
  • £4 if they are provided from elsewhere.

If you have a visual impairment or other disability which stops you from using the book lending service you won't be charged for reservations. Contact your local library for more details.
