Sandwich Toll Bridge
We will be carrying out essential maintenance on the Sandwich Toll Bridge from 17 February 2020 for 7 weeks. This is to ensure reliability, efficiency and the safety of the road.
Due to deterioration the mechanical and electrical components that enable to the bridge to operate need to be replaced. The refurbishment works will ensure that the bridge remains safe and operational for both highway and river navigation.
What will change
To carry out the works we will:
- remove the bridge deck and place this in the yard
- replace the mechanical and electrical components
- clean and repaint the bridge deck
- upgrade the swing bridge operational procedures
- repair the road.
Road closure and diversion
The road will be closed for the for the duration of the works.
During the works, vehicles will be diverted and pedestrians will have a dedicated shuttle bus to transport them to the other end of the bridge. The bus timetable will operate daily from 6am to 12am. River navigation will be maintained without restrictions whilst the bridge is removed.
The closure will not be taking place at the same time as the A256 Southern Water roadworks.
Until the works are completed some residents and businesses near to the site will experience some disruption but we will try to keep this to a minimum.
In response to the Coronavirus outbreak, we have postponed the planned works to refurbish Sandwich Toll Bridge that were due to start under road closure on Monday 30 March 2020.
A revised date for the works has not yet been set but it is hoped that it will be later this year.
