Sittingbourne town centre regeneration
This scheme will see significant improvements to the road network in Sittingbourne to allow the first phase of a 10 year major redevelopment scheme. The scheme will see 230 jobs being created with the construction of a new cinema, retail units and restaurants in the first phase.
These works will include:
- the realignment of St Michael’s Road
- the introduction of an integrated transport interchange in front of Sittingbourne Station
- new dedicated pedestrian routes from the station to the town centre and the High Street
The road scheme will be delivered in 2018/19.
The 10 year redevelopment scheme – called Spirit of Sittingbourne scheme – received planning approval by Swale Borough Council in March 2015.
It will bring around £330 million into Sittingbourne over the next 10 years, and create around 700 new jobs within phase 1. As well as the new cinema, retail units and restaurants, the scheme will also deliver up to 213 new apartments, a new multi-storey car park and additional public realm space.
The £59 million phase 1 town centre regeneration project is a major mixed use scheme being delivered by Swale Borough Council’s development partner Spirit of Sittingbourne - in a public private partnership that includes U+I, Essential Land and Quinn Estates.
The transport scheme will cost £4.7 million.
It will be funded by a contribution of £2.5 million from the Local Growth Fund, provided as part of the Growth Deal to the South East Local Enterprise Partnership. An additional £2.2 million has been committed by Swale Borough Council to deliver this scheme.
The approval to progress the Sittingbourne town centre regeneration was taken by Kent County Council on 9 April 2015.
The decision by the SELEP Accountability Board to grant Local Growth Funding for the Sittingbourne town centre regeneration was made on the 13 November 2015.
The government Growth Deal provides money to the South East Local Enterprise Partnership, funding projects which drive Kent’s economic and business growth.
