Local Growth Fund projects

The government Growth Deal provides money to the South East Local Enterprise Partnership (SELEP) for projects which drive Kent’s economic and business growth.

The SELEP Accountability Board is responsible for making decisions and funding approvals for all schemes awarded funding as part of the growth deal bids to central Government. The SELEP Accountability Board provides a forward plan of all future meetings and decisions that will be taken as well as record previous meetings and minutes.

We have received funding for the following projects, listed by district:

Innovation Investment Initiative

Offering loan and equity finance to small businesses with the appetite and potential for long-term growth. The Innovation Investment Initiative Scheme invests in projects which enable businesses to create and adopt innovative products, processes and services, delivering sustainable employment growth.

Kent Thameside Local Sustainable Transport

The Kent Thameside Local Sustainable Transport project aims to improve the walking and cycling facilities in and around bus and train stations in Dartford and Gravesham, as well as improving the Fastrack service to reduce the reliance on cars.

West Kent Local Sustainable Transport (cutting congestion)

A package of schemes and initiatives to allow people to transfer between different types of transport, making sustainable transport a real alternative to the private car in Sevenoaks, Maidstone, Tunbridge Wells and Tonbridge and Malling.

A28 Chart Road, Ashford

Improving the existing stretch of the A28 Chart Road, Ashford between the 'Tank' and 'Matalan' roundabouts widened into 2 lanes each way.

Ashford Spurs (Ashford International Rail Connectivity)

Ashford Spurs (Ashford International Rail Connectivity) is an upgrade of signalling so the next generation of Eurostar trains can continue to stop at the station.

M20 Junction 10A, Ashford

M20 Junction 10A, Ashford is a Highways England led scheme that involves the development of a new junction on the M20 east of the existing M20 Junction 10. It will link a new dual carriageway link road with the A2070 Southern Orbital Road to the south of Ashford.

A28 Sturry Road

A28 Sturry Road Integrated Transport Package, Canterbury is a bus lane improvement scheme being developed with Canterbury City Council.

Sturry Link Road

Sturry Link Road project aims to reduce traffic through the centre of Sturry, relieve congestion at the Sturry level crossing and cater for extra traffic from new housing.

Kent and Medway Engineering Design Growth and Enterprise (EDGE)

Kent and Medway Engineering Design Growth and Enterprise (EDGE) is a new 3,588m2 facility in Canterbury, with satellite facilities at Discovery Park. The project supports high value employment, growth and investment in engineering and technology businesses.

Kent and Medway Medical School

Kent and Medway Medical School is a new facility to provide an innovative centre for medical education and research to develop the health and social care workforce. The project will drive productivity and innovation in the health economy and contribute to the development of the ‘medical corridor’ envisaged by the Thames Estuary 2050 Growth Commission.

Dartford Town Centre

The Dartford Town Centre plans to improve of the layout of Market Street (A226) and the Hythe Street/Westgate Street Junction, including a new marketplace and better links through to the High Street and the station.

St Clements Way, Greenhithe

St Clements Way, Greenhithe Improvement Scheme is increasing the size and capacity of the St Clements Way/London Road roundabout and provide new bus lanes to reduce congestion.

Dover Western Docks Revival

Two roundabout junctions (Prince of Wales and York Street) on the A20 adjacent to the Western Docks were remodelled to improve the flow of traffic along the A20 and in and out of the docks. The works were completed in April 2017.

Middle Deal transport improvements

Middle Deal transport improvements scheme provides a new link road between Albert Road, to the east of Deal, and Southwall Road, to the west, forming a spine road for a new housing development.

Sandwich Station

For the 149th Open Golf Championship at Royal St George’s Golf Club in July 2021, Network Rail have extended both platforms at Sandwich Station and constructed a footbridge to enhance passenger travel capacity.

Folkestone seafront development

The Folkestone Seafront development reinforced the beach and creates a ‘green walk’ from the town to the Harbour Arm.

Gravesend Bus Hub

Gravesend Bus Hub (Barrack Row) is a new bus hub to improve the transport interchange between bus and rail services in Gravesend Town Centre.

Rathmore Road link, Gravesend

Rathmore Road Link, Gravesend is becoming a two-way road and additional road and junction improvements made so that the town’s railway station is integrated with the rest of the town centre.

Keep Maidstone Moving

Keep Maidstone Moving is a package of traffic infrastructure schemes at congestion hotspots that aim to improve journey time reliability to support the delivery of significant housing and employment growth in Maidstone.

Maidstone Bridges Improvement Scheme

Maidstone Bridges Improvement Scheme was the construction of two additional northbound lanes on the eastern side of the River Medway, with new junctions controlled by traffic signals. Additional works will also improve nearby pedestrian areas.

A2500 Lower Road, Isle of Sheppey

The A2500 Lower Road, Isle of Sheppey scheme is looking at the existing signal-controlled junction of A2500 Lower Road and Barton Hill Drive to be replaced by a roundabout.

Sittingbourne Town Centre Regeneration

The Sittingbourne Town Centre Regeneration aims to improve the road network in Sittingbourne. This will allow the first phase of a 10 year major redevelopment scheme to start that includes a new cinema, retail units and restaurants.

Thanet Parkway

We are building a new Thanet Parkway railway station located on the Ashford International to Ramsgate line, and just to the west of the village of Cliffsend.

Leigh expansion and Hildenborough embankment scheme

The scheme will make improvements to the Leigh Flood Storage Area (FSA) and construct a new flood embankment in Hildenborough. The Environment Agency are responsible for the delivery of this scheme

M20 Junction 4 Eastern Overbridge Widening, West Malling

M20 Junction 4 Eastern Overbridge Widening, West Malling was widened to provide an extra traffic lane, increasing the road from 2 to 3 lanes. This was completed in March 2017.

Tonbridge 20mph zone

Tonbridge 20mph zone scheme delivered a more attractive shopping area for Tonbridge, and involved widening high street pavements, improving street signs and installing a new cycle lane. The works were completed in 2016.

Tonbridge  Station access improvements

Tonbridge station access improvements scheme secured £500,000 of funding from the West Kent Local Growth Fund (LGF) to improve the transport interchange at Tonbridge station. The aim is to improve interaction between customers of the station, provide more space for pedestrians and create an interchange suitable for one of the busiest stations outside of London. The scheme will link the design to other redevelopment projects such as the High Street and Pembury Road.

Tunbridge Wells junction improvements

The Tunbridge Wells junction improvements (A26 London Road/Speldhurst Road/Yew Tree Road) Phase 1 included traffic signal improvement at the junction of A26 London Road/Speldhurst Road/Yew tree Road. Phase 2 includes improvements to cycle infrastructure on the A26 between its junctions with Grosvenor Rd, Tunbridge Wells and Brook St, Tonbridge and bringing these together to establish a single, consistent, cycle route between the two towns to follow.
