Population change
The population of an area changes as a result
of two components:
- Births and deaths (known as natural change)
- Migration
Year on year Kent has seen more births than
deaths and more people moving in to Kent than leaving. The result
has been steady population growth in the county.
What's causing Kent's population growth? (PDF, 399K) summarises
the two components of population change in each Kent district.
More information on each component can be
found in the
births and deaths bulletin (PDF, 697k) and from the
migration indicators for Kent report (PDF, 1.5Mb)
The number of deaths in Kent has been falling
steadily over recent years due to people living longer.
More information is available in our
life expectancy bulletin (PDF, 591k).
Forecasts of how Kent’s population is expected
to change in the future are produced. This assists the County
Council in the planning of future services. The forecasts
take account of the additional housing expected to be built in
Kent over the next 20 years and the forecasts also take into
account expected changes in demographic trends and living
patterns. Read more on population
forecasts for Kent.
