Kent Electoral Wards
An electoral ward is a subdivision of a local authority. They
are spatial units used to elect local councillors and therefore the
availability of statistical information for wards has considerable
importance for local government.
There are a total of 283 electoral wards in the Kent County
Council area and a further 22 electoral wards in the Medway Unitary
Authority area.
The population size of electoral wards varies across the Kent
County Council area. The average population size of an electoral
ward in the Kent County Council area is 5,000.
Socio-economic profiles for all individual wards in Kent have
been produced using data from the 2001 Census. These profiles
provide good background information for local studies.
Kent's current ward boundaries were adopted in 2002/03.
Ward boundaries can be redrawn to allow for changes in
population within an area. The Boundary Committee for England are
responsible for ward boundary changes as part of the Periodic
Electoral Reviews, which are undertaken to ensure that the number
of electors represented by each councillor is similar within each
local authority. For more information please visit The
Boundary Committee for England website.
