Profile of Kent residents by age

Annual mid-year population estimates published by the Office for National Statistics provide the most up to date picture of Kent's population.  The figures are available by 5-year age group and gender for Kent local authority district areas and electoral wards.

The population estimates will indicate how large Kent's young and elderly population are, for example.  However, they provide no further information on the characteristics of each of the population groups.

The 2001 Census provides the most comprehensive socio-economic profile of the residents by age.  A selection of data outlining the characteristics ( for example, health, housing, employment status etc.,) for three population groups is available:

To assist Kent County Council develop its later life strategy, an Older People of Kent report has also been produced.

Kent's population profile is changing.  The number of young and middle aged people is forecast to decline in future years, whereas the number of older people is forecast to significantly increase.  Our population is ageing and one of the reasons for this is increased life expectancy.
