Equality and Diversity
Data to support equality and diversity
The Equality Act came into effect on 1 October 2010. The act
uses one common language and puts all of equality law into one
place. It also sets out to give consistent rights and protection to
people from different groups, with the exception of disabled people
who have been given additional protection. By simplifying and
streamlining the law, the act makes it easier to understand, comply
with and enforce.
An equal society recognises people's different needs, situations
and goals, and removes the barriers that limit what people can do
and be. Knowing your community and equality mapping is
essential to achieving an equal society.
The Equality Framework embodies the 'COUNT' principle - Count
Once and Use Numerous Times. In line with this principle,
these web pages attempt to draw together in one place all the
information which will help people understand the diversity of
Kent's population and will be a key source of information for
undertaking equality analysis.
There are 9 equality characteristics currently
protected by discrimination law. These are age, disability,
gender re-assignment, marriage and civil partnership,
pregnancy & maternity, race, religion or belief, sex and sexual
orientation. We have data for:
A Diversity Profile which draws together these characteristics
into one place has been produced for each district council area in
Kent to provide an overview of equalities and diversity. This
is available within our district profiles which can be found on the
area profiles page
Currently there is no data set on gender re-assignment or sexual
orientation.
Pregnancy and maternity data will be added in the
future.
