Equalities and Diversity
Data to support equalities and diversity
There are numerous pieces of legislation which require
authorities to provide an equal and fair service to the whole
community. These include the Race Relations [Amendment] Act
2000, the Equality Framework for Local Government and the
forthcoming Equality Act 2010.
An equal society recognises people's different needs, situations
and goals, and removes the barriers that limit what people can do
and be. Knowing your community and equality mapping is
essential to achieving an equal society.
The Equality Framework embodies the 'COUNT' principle - Count
Once and Use Numerous Times. In line with this principle,
these web pages attempt to draw together in one place all of the
information which will help people understand the diversity of
Kent's population and will be a key source of information for
undertaking Customer Impact Assessments.
There are nine equality characteristics currently protected
by discrimination law. These are age, disability, gender
re-assignment, marriage & civil partnership, pregnancy
& maternity, race, religion or belief, sex and sexual
orientation.
Currently there is no data set on gender re-assignment
or pregnancy and maternities at a local level and for
this reason information on these two characteristics are
not presented.
There is limited information available on sexual orientation and civil partnerships
within Kent. More detailed information on each of the
five individual characteristics is available via the
links below. Where possible, a detailed profile of the
socio-economic status of residents by each of
these characteristics has been presented.
An Equalities and Diversity Profile which draws
together these five characteristics into one place has been
produced for each district council area in Kent to provide an
overview of equalities and diversity.
