Help with paying your Council Tax

Council Tax benefit is available for families on low incomes and to pensioners living on a state pension.

Families on low incomes

Families on low incomes should contact their local district council - even if you do not qualify for other benefits, you could still be paying too much. The level of benefit depends on your Council Tax bill, your income and savings and whether anyone else (such as a grown-up son or daughter, or a lodger) lives with you. You may also be able to reduce your bill if:

  • the property is empty
  • only one adult lives there
  • you are disabled
  • you are a student
  • you are a student nurse

Pensioners

If you are a pensioner living on a state pension, with less than £16,000 in savings, you could be one of around 30,000 pensioners who, on average, could be £9 per week better off after applying for Council Tax benefit. Call the Kent Benefits Partnership on 0845 345 0310.
