Climate Change

Climate Change is an increasingly pressing and prevalent issue debated by society today. The potential impact of hotter, drier summers and warmer, wetter winters upon Kent's road network is one that Kent Highway Services takes very seriously. For example did you know that over two-thirds of all extreme weather events in Kent over the last 10 years directly impacted the road network and these impacts are predicted to increase in the future?

Kent Highway Services recognises the need to act now in order to effectively adapt to the future impacts of climate change. In view of this KHS recently hosted its own Climate Change Conference that looked at:

  • the services that are most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, such as flooded or cracked roads
  • what changes can be made in road design, construction and maintenance to reduce such impacts
  • how to reduce carbon emissions as we build and maintain the Network in the future

The outcomes of the event will help Kent Highway Services to develop an effective climate change strategy so it can adapt in order to continue to deliver an effective service for Kent's travelling public.
