Any form of transport can be sustainable: public
transport, car sharing, walking and cycling. Plus vehicles that
keep carbon emissions and other pollutants to a minimum, such as
electric and hybrid cars and biodiesel.
In a nutshell, sustainable travel is any form of transport that
keeps damage to our environment, and therefore to the future, to a
minimum.
Why is sustainable travel vital for Kent?
Kent has a large and growing population. Plus it provides an
important link to mainland Europe for freight and passenger
traffic. This means that the number of motor vehicles on our roads
is huge, and growing all the time.
The result is more carbon emissions and other pollutants that
damage the environment, add to global warming and reduce air
quality for local residents.
It also means more congestion, longer delays, increased parking
problems, and reduced road safety.
Sustainable travel can also be a very valuable way of improving
health. By reducing our dependence on the car, we will increase the
amount of time we spend walking or cycling - even if it is just to
a bus-stop or car share pick-up.
What can you do?
There are a number of ways that we can make our use of transport
more sustainable:
