Safety cameras help save lives in Kent.
We may complain, we may think they're there to make money, but
the fact is that they make roads safer.
What are safety cameras really for?
Safety cameras are put in place to encourage motorists to drive
within the speed limit. And they are always clearly signposted well
in advance, so drivers know that they are in, or entering, a
stretch of roads where safety cameras are in place.
In fact, the most successful cameras are those which record the
least number of offences, not the most.
What's more, we explore all possible alternatives to help us
improve road safety on a stretch of road before we put safety
cameras in place.
Even then, cameras can only be placed at sites where excessive
speed has significantly contributed to the number of crashes where
people have been killed or seriously injured. Or in areas where
high speeds clearly pose a threat to safety.
