Every year, hundreds of Year 6 children in Kent learn how
to deal with common hazardous situations, in a safe
environment.
These exercises are called Safety in Action or Junior Citizen
(depending on which part of the county you are in). The idea is to
teach children how to deal with common dangers in a practical
way.
The most common themes of the exercise are:
- gas safety
- personal safety
- fire safety
- road safety
- home safety
- garden or farm safety
- water safety
- rail safety
- safe travel on buses
How are the safety themes taught?
Each organisation arranges a short task for the children,
approximately 10 minutes long, in which they cover the most
important aspects of their subject. The children are presented with
a developing situation and their response, or the action they take,
is assessed by the 'experts'.
Beside the practical aspect, all attendees take away a bag full
of leaflets and other goodies that are spread far and wide,
reaching others with messages of safety. Many of these are
subsidised by local firms, thereby bringing a sense of community to
the whole proceedings.
The idea is that the children learn how to deal with dangerous
situations in a practical way. The children will also have fun, and
the aim is that they enjoy the training.
Which organisations support the training?
A range of organisations are involved in setting up the
scenarios. These include:
- Kent Police
- Kent County Council
- Connex
- HM Coastguard
- Fire Service
- British Gas
