Road safety in Kent

Keeping road users safe is one of the council's priorities. To help us do this, we constantly monitor the safety record of our roads. And we use data on casualties and crashes to create specific projects and initiatives to help us. In 2007 there were a total of 4,779 crashes on Kent roads (excluding Medway), which resulted in 6,466 casualties. As a result:

  • 91 people died
  • 632 road users were seriously injured

Since the publication of these figures in April 2008, the severity of three 2007 serious crashes have become fatal. These crashes were in the districts of Maidstone, Dartford and Shepway. The overall Killed or Seriously Injured total remains unchanged.

Although there has been an overall improvement in road safety over the last 10 years, there are still far too many people killed or injured on our roads.

Our targets for road safety

Road safety is, of course, a national issue. And there are national targets for reducing casualties by 2010.
Targets are vital, because they help us identify how successful our schemes are, and therefore what we may need to do more of, and what we may need to do differently.
Compared with the 1994-98 average, our target is:

  • a 40% reduction in the number of people killed or seriously injured in road accidents (KSI)
  • a 50% reduction in the number of children killed or seriously injured.
  • a 10% reduction in the slight casualty rate expressed as the number of people slightly injured per 100million vehicle kilometres (MVKm).

For information on injury crashes in Medway, contact Medway Council.

If you would like crash statistics for a specific road or area, contact the Road safety team and provide them with a location plan.

Are we meeting our targets?

We are on target to meet our KSI 2010 casualty reduction targets, for both the total number of people and for children. Compared with the 1994 - 1998 coverage KSI casualties are down by 39.5%.
