'Encouraging contractors to carry out their works in a
safe, consistent and considerate manner'
The Considerate Contractor Scheme is a joint venture between
Kent County Council, Medway Unitary Authority and the utility
companies (e.g. gas, water, electricity and phone companies). The
scheme is about rewarding high standards of workmanship on the
roads and pavements.
Kent and Medway are promoting the scheme to encourage those
contractors engaged in highway works, to do so in a safe,
consistent and considerate manner. We have developed, in
conjunction with HAUC and NJUG a nationally consistent 'Code of
Practice' which outlines the standards required.
Contractors should be:
Caring
The work should be safe. Positive consideration should be given to
the public, traders and businesses. Special attention will be given
to those with sight, hearing and mobility difficulties.
Clean
Roads and pavements to be kept tidy and safe. All equipment to be
kept clean and neat.
Considerate
Noise and dust are to be kept to a minimum and works should be done
when they will have the least affect on the public, traders and
businesses.
Co-operative
The contractor will deal with any problems in a friendly, polite
and
co-operative manner.
Each month, specially trained personnel carry out 'Site Safety'
checks for the contractor sites all over Kent and Medway. At the
end of the year, these results will be adjudicated by a panel of
representatives, who will then decide on who the best performers
are. It is the intention of the Kent and Medway Considerate
Contractor Scheme, to have three awards, but may be subject to
change. The awards are as follows:
- Gold Award - which will be awarded to those organisations which
show a consistent and high degree of compliance with the
requirements of the Code of Good Practice
- Considerate Contractor - will be awarded to those organisations
which regularly meet the requirements of the Code of Good
Practice.
- Individual Awards - will be awarded to those companies or
operatives that have excelled. This category may also include a
contractor and gang of the year if merited.
