Kent County Council regularly inspects and maintains
hedges on the highway.
Why do we need to look after hedges on the highway?
Hedges that become overgrown can become a problem for road
users. They can reduce visibility by interfering with sight lines
alongside roads, and they can obscure signs, signals or
streetlights.
Hedges that overhang pavements can become a danger for
pedestrians - particularly those who are partially sighted or who
have mobility difficulties.
Hedges alongside rural lanes and paths can be a particular
problem for cyclists and horseriders.
How do we look after hedges on the highway?
Kent County Council inspects all hedges that are near enough to
the highway or pavement to cause a problem.
Many hedges that border pavements are on private land. It is up
to the owners of these hedges to keep them maintained, and to make
sure they do not reduce the width of the available pavement for
pedestrians.
If we think a hedge may is causing a problem, we tell the owner
and ask them to carry out the work needed.
