Kent has one of the largest and most heavily used road networks
in the country. We need to carefully and regularly maintain it to
keep road users safe, and traffic moving.
There are 2,800 bridges that are owned by us and 1,200 owned by
others. These structures include bridges, subways, culverts,
gantries, tunnels, viaducts, and retaining walls and
footbridges.
Kent County Council regularly and carefully maintains streets
and pavements to improve and maintain road safety, and ensure
smooth traffic flow.
Weather conditions are unpredictable, with the occurrence and
severity varying considerably throughout the winter. To ensure we
provide the best possible service for Kent, our winter service
period operates from mid October to mid April.
Roadworks can be frustrating. But they are essential to keep
roads users safe and to improve journeys in the long run. You can
use our database of current roadworks to help avoid any delays to
your journey.
We inspect and maintain trees, hedges and verges to keep the
highway safe, clear and attractive.
