Highway maintenance

Kent's 5,000 miles of roads and pavements are essential to its residents, businesses and visitors. And they need to be regularly and carefully maintained.

Kent has one of the largest and most heavily used road networks in the country. We need to carefully and regularly maintain it to keep road users safe, and traffic moving.

There are 2,800 bridges that are owned by us and 1,200 owned by others. These structures include bridges, subways, culverts, gantries, tunnels, viaducts, and retaining walls and footbridges.

Kent County Council regularly and carefully maintains streets and pavements to improve and maintain road safety, and ensure smooth traffic flow.

We work hard to keep roads safe and traffic moving during bad weather.

If there is an obstruction on the road, we need to know so we can clear it.

Roadworks can be frustrating. But they are essential to keep roads users safe and to improve journeys in the long run. You can use our database of current roadworks to help avoid any delays to your journey.

We inspect and maintain trees, hedges and verges to keep the highway safe, clear and attractive.
