Key projects outside Growth areas

Major construction projects are not limited to the growth areas in Kent. Throughout the county, there are many interesting and important building developments, planned or underway, which will help make Kent an even better place to live, work and visit.

Marlowe Academy – Ramsgate

A new performing arts and business academy secondary school is planned to open in 2006. The new school will cost £28 million and take 1100 students. It will have full access for people with disabilities and modern facilities. The state-of-the-art design provides a large and impressive indoor open space and aims to encourage community involvement and personal development.

Westwood Cross shopping centre – Thanet

This new urban retail centre covers 350,000 square feet between Margate and Ramsgate. It fully opened in June 2005. The scheme has already attracted three major national stores and includes a new loop bus system that links the centre to the surrounding areas. It is expected to create 1300 jobs.

Fremlin Walk Development – Maidstone

This new shopping complex in the heart of Maidstone has now opened. It consists of 350,000 square feet of shopping space and includes 50 shopping units and 800 parking spaces.

Kings Hill – West Malling

A development covering over 263 hectares and consisting of businesses and leisure, residential and retail premises. Over 100 businesses currently take up 700,000 square feet of commercial space with another one million square feet planned. There are currently 1300 completed homes with 350 under construction. The scheme also includes a shopping centre, superstore, two primary schools, a doctors’ surgery and an 18-hole golf course.
