Speed watch - stay safe

Speed Watch monitoring must only take place where a 30 or 40mph speed limit is already in force.

The following criteria must be adhered to:

  • all volunteers must be aged 18 years or over
  • there must always be at least two volunteers together at any one time
  • volunteers must never stand in the road/carriageway
  • at no time should a volunteer attempt to stop a motorist 
  • volunteers should not obstruct the footpath
  • fluorescent jackets must be worn at all times whilst monitoring traffic speeds
  • volunteers must not attempt to conceal their activities from passing motorists
  • volunteers must place appropriate 'Community Speed Watch' signs at their location when monitoring is taking place
  • a team of volunteers should be possession of at least one mobile phone
  • any approach to a volunteer by a member of the public should be directed to the appropriate Roads Policing Officer. A leaflet which contains information about the scheme and contact details for the Police Officer will be provided to the member of the public.
