Community Speed Watch Scheme
'The promotion of safer driving in
communities through education'
Community Speed Watch is a
scheme that enables local people to address speeding issues in
their own communities. The volunteers work within their communities
to educate drivers of speeding issues.
Many villages and small towns have problems
with vehicles that fail to reduce their speed when driving through
their 30mph and 40mph speed limits.
Some communities find that drivers don’t
reduce their speed until they are well past the speed limit sign
and then some only slow down by a small amount. Some aren’t aware
that they are in a residential area and some don’t care – Speed
Watch’s aim is to educate these drivers!
Speed Watch can also help to investigate
complaints of speeding in communities and show whether the issues
are perceived or real. This information can then be used to
reassure local residents or to gain support from local Police or
Kent County Council to help combat speeding issues.

What do we need to run a
scheme?
You need the backing of your Parish Council or
have a recognised residents association or committee (we can advise
how to achieve this). A minimum of 6 volunteers is needed to get
your scheme running.
Is it safe for
volunteers?
Yes – the Police gives full training to
volunteers. The training covers how the scheme works, what
equipment is used and how to stay safe
when deployed.
Are speeding drivers
prosecuted?
No – this is an educational scheme. The Police
will send out warning letters.
Will the Police carry out speed
checks?
Areas where speeding is identified as a
persistent issue may be considered for Police enforcement.
