Young drivers
We take the
education of young drivers very seriously and the following
statistics help to explain why.
- In the 3 year period 2006-2008, 513 young people, aged 17-24,
died or were seriously injured on the roads in Kent
- Nationally, the death rate among young drivers has doubled in
the past 5 years
- 20% of all drivers have a crash in their first year of driving,
and 1 in 5 drivers will crash within the first 6 months of passing
their driving test
- A 17 year old male is 7 times more likely to have a crash than
a middle aged man
- Over 1,000 people are killed each year in the UK in crashes
where at least one driver is aged between 17 and 21. This is 28% of
all deaths in car accidents
- Drivers aged 17 to 21 have a lower than average annual
mileage. They represent 10% of the total driver population, but are
involved in 20% of all crashes. The risk is particularly high
between 2am and 5am
- Crashes are often speed-related and occur at bends and
roundabouts.
