Road safety campaignOur road safety team strives "to reduce road casualties and contribute to quality of life in Kent".

Our performance is measured against local and national casualty reduction targets.

The 2010 national targets were set by the government in 2000, and influence local targets and Kent County Council's stated road safety commitments.

These are to be measured against a baseline set from 1994 to 1998.

  • 40% reduction in the number of people killed and seriously injured in road crashes
  • 50% reduction in the number of children killed and seriously injured in road crashes
  • 10% reduction in the number of people slightly injured per million vehicle kilometres.

Our work programme comprises a range of road safety initiatives, involving a number of key partners:

  • Kent Police
  • The Kent and Medway Safety Camera Partnership
  • Kent Fire and Rescue
  • Highways Agency
  • Local communities

We're determined to reduce the number of people killed, or seriously injured on Kent's roads every year. That's why we run various thought-provoking and hard-hitting road safety campaigns.

The campaign programme targets the 3 crucial areas affecting driving and road safety:

  • Speed - inappropriate and illegal speed
  • Impairment - alcohol, drugs and mobile phone use
  • Social responsibility - understanding the risks and consequences.

The main aim of our campaigns are to influence drivers' attitudes, and change behaviour resulting in a reduction in crashes and casualties on Kent's roads. This will in turn improve the quality of life for Kent's residents.

Our campaigns use various forms of media including:

  • media relations
  • websites
  • television and radio
  • targeted night-time economy promotions
  • posters
  • bus advertising
  • competitions
  • banners
  • drivers' pledge
  • promotions at motor racing venues and other events
  • schools engagement
  • innovative campaign launches.
