Personal injury crash and crash data
In 2010, there was a total of 4,278 crashes on Kent roads,
including the motorways and trunk roads but excluding roads in
Medway.
These crashes resulted in injuries to 5,802 people from
which:
- 55 people died
- 490 road users were seriously injured.
Keeping road users safe is one of our priorities. To help us do
this we use data on casualties and crashes to create specific
projects and initiatives aimed at reducing the number of people
injured or killed on our roads.
The county of Kent is served by 3 highway authorities: Kent
County Council, the Highways Agency and Medway Council.
Kent Police collects over 60 pieces of statistical data for each
injury crash for the whole county.
The data here refers only to the roads that are the
responsibility of Kent County Council, unless stated otherwise.
Crashes are categorised by severity:
- Fatal - a crash resulting in a death.
- Serious - detention in hospital, includes
paralysis, fractures and severe lacerations.
- Slight - includes whiplash, sprains and minor
lacerations.
Human error is a factor in 95% of road crashes. Based on the
Department for Transport's figures, the cost to the community of a
fatal crash is around £1.9 million, a serious crash costs in the
region of £218,000 and a slight crash costs £22,000.
