Winter weather maintenance
During winter, the
weather conditions can vary considerably with severe weather
occurring at any time. Because of this, we are on standby from
mid-October to mid-April to deal with the effects of winter weather
on Kent's roads.
When icy conditions are forecast, we will salt the main routes,
called our primary salting routes, to prevent frost and ice forming
on the road surfaces.
If you would like to know if your road is included in our
salting routes, view our interactive
map of salting routes.
The map shows the primary salting routes of the county. In
addition to this, we may also salt other routes that may not appear
on the map.
Find out more about when and how we salt the roads.
In addition to our routine winter service, we are also prepared
for severe or extended periods of winter weather and
snow.
We work hard to keep the principal routes in Kent clear of snow
and ice but do not have the resources to clear all roads.
To help keep safe on the the roads during bad weather, make
sure that you:
- give yourself plenty of time for your journey – including
setting off earlier
- ensure your car is completely clear of ice
- avoid any sudden actions on the road, as this can lead to
incidents and crashes
- watch the weather forecast and make plans accordingly
- keep a blanket, warm clothes and water in the car
and check your mobile phone is fully charged before you
set off
- observe the speed limit and drive in keeping with the
conditions on the road
- follow advice given out about when journeys by road are
not recommended.
We will do all we can to keep the roads safe, but
remember we all have a personal responsibility for our own
safety.
