Parishes and local communities snow clearing
Salt Bins
Parishes can purchase their own salt bins and place them on
highways land (subject to agreement with highways inspector or
engineer agreement).
For further advice please speak to your parish, who in
turn will liaise with our stewards. Parishes will be responsible
for filling and maintenance of their bins.
Find your nearest salt bin.
Salt bags
Salt bags can be delivered to parishes that request them and can
be used by the local community. We encourage Parish Councils to use
their newsletters and websites to advise their local community of
where to access the salt bags and how the mix should be used.
Snow clearance
Last year we set up a new contract for the clearance of snow
from the county highways.
The contract is open to farmers, hauliers and small contractors
and will run for three years with the hourly rates for snow
clearing being agreed annually with the National Farmers Union.
Updates to the rates will be advised in writing and also
published on the Kent County Council website.
For more information see our snow clearance tender section.
You are perfectly entitled to clear snow and ice on the pavement
outside your home. But don't be put off clearing paths because
you're afraid someone will get injured.
It's unlikely you'll be sued or held legally responsible for any
injuries on the path if you have cleared it carefully.
Be careful when you are shovelling snow ensuring your own safety
and visibility especially if you clearing snow when it's dark or at
night.
