Sittingbourne Northern RSittingbourne Northern Relief Roadelief Road

Sittingbourne Northern Relief Road is 1.4 km of new single carriageway road in the north east of Sittingbourne, with bridges over Milton Creek and the Sittingbourne and Kemsley Light Railway.

The new road connects two sections of the relief road built by developers between Grovehurst interchange on the A249 and Ridham Avenue; and between Castle Road and the East Hall Farm residential development.

It will help to reduce traffic within the town centre and support future regeneration plans. It will provide better and more reliable access to the Eurolink Business Estate and East Hall Farm residential development with a direct connection to the A249.  It will support existing businesses and encourage further investment into the area.

It is hoped that in the future the Relief Road will be extended eastwards to connect to the A2 at Bapchild.

For more information, please see scheme plan (PDF, 4MB).

A construction contract was awarded to Jackson Civil Engineering and work started on site in November 2009.

Scheme cost - £32m funded by Department of Transport, Homes & Communities Agency and East Hall Farm development contributions.

Current situation

The new Relief Road was opened to traffic on 15 December 2011.
